Objective and method of KoZon.

The objective of KoZon is to push back, as much as possible, the use of firewood in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, by making use of solar energy for the cooking of food, against the lowest possible cost.

For this KoZon advocates the introduction of an ‘Integrated Solar Cooking System' among women in developing countries, starting in the Sahel region of West Africa.

This system has three components:

  1. a CooKit, consisting of a foldable cardboard box, covered on the inner side  with reflecting aluminium foil; and a heat-resistant plastic bag, in which a black pot can be placed, to create a glasshouse effect: a ‘CooKit';
  2. a hay basket or -bag for ‘after-cooking';
  3. an improved wood furnace for the early morning or days of no or little sunshine.
1. CooKit. The black pot with content is placed in a heat resistant plastic bag for the glasshouse effect. No need for firewood. 2.  Hay basket or -bag with cushions. After-cooking of a meal in such a bag saves a lot of firewood.

3. Improved wood stove (left) next to a traditional 3-stone fire (right); or: two pieces of wood in stead of eight.

 The positive results are the reduction of:

  1. the workload for the women, who have to collect the firewood;
  2. the smoke, that is a health hazard for the women who do the cooking and for the children at home;
  3. the pressure on the scarce vegetation, thus slowing down desertification;
  4. emission of the harmful greenhouse gas CO2.
